June 2010 Box League Champions

June is always a difficult month for outdoor box leagues in Calgary. The fact that it is the city’s wettest month on average makes it hard on players with a tendency to procrastinate.
June 2010 was no different. While the vast majority of players were able to contact their opponents and get their matches in, a record 12 registered league players were eliminated from four different box leagues.
Calgary Beg/Int Outdoor Tennis Box League
In June, May’s Calgary Beg/Int Outdoor Tennis Box League champion, William Toro, suffered a leg injury during warm up immediately prior to a scheduled match with Michiko Brown. The resulting forfeit combined with Anirudh Kumar‘s 7-5, 7-5 victory over Brown in the same month, gave Kumar the monthly championship.
Meanwhile two players in lower boxes were eliminated for failing to report any scores: Olga Kosteckyj and Naomi Brown. Unfortunately, it appears as though both eliminations were the result of failures to communicate. Had either player observed the Five Day Rule one or both may have been able to continue.
Calgary Int/Adv Outdoor Tennis Box League
Emmanuel Giry prevailed in two three-set victories over Don Best (3,6,4) and Colby Cavanagh (7,2,3) in June to repeat as Calgary Int/Adv Outdoor Tennis Box League champion for the second consecutive month. As a result, Best moves out of the top box and is replaced by newcomer Jay Habash.
At the same time, Erik Mendoza and Peter Nicholson were both eliminated from Box 5. Mendoza, who had been climbing steadily for several months, is out due to a shoulder injury and should be rejoining the league in a couple of months. However, Nicholson, who was eliminated for a third time in as many years for not reporting any scores has been permanently eliminated from this league.
Calgary Summer Squash Box League
Steve Watson defeated Gavin Kraemer (3-1) and Mark Jones (3-1) to repeat as the Calgary Summer Squash Box League champion for the second consecutive month. Watson and Kraemer are now joined in the top box by Ifty Hanif.
Unfortunately, Box 5 suffered a complete disaster this month with the elimination of all three players — probably due to a failure to communicate. With this in mind all players are reminded to observe the Five Day Rule and to let admins know early in the month when their opponents are unresponsive. Otherwise they could suffer the same fate as the players in Box 5.
Calgary Speed Badminton Box League
Continuing with our theme of eliminations due to communications failures, five players were eliminated from the Calgary Speed Badminton Box League this month for failing to report scores. Only three players currently remain in this league: Randy Lewis (who repeated this month as champion), Dragan Lemez and Brent Johner.
With only three players remaining alive, this league has now been downgraded from ACTIVE to PROPOSED. At least three more Registered League Players must join for this league to become active again.
