Fresh/Clean Start

February 12, 2012 in

In an effort to improve performance and maintainability and to separate racquetnetwork IP into it’s own corporate identified account hosted at http://racquetnetwork.com.

Research so far indicates our current host provider and infrastructure is still ‘best-of-bread’ but that a ‘refresh’ is needed in order to overcome 7 years of bloat.

  1. Create new generic Racquet Network Dreamhost account as discussed in emails with Dreamhost support.  First Name = Racquet, Last Name = Network, Email = racquetnetwork@racquetnetwork.com .
  2. Give full access to shaunmacrae@racquetnetwork.com and brentjohner@racquetnetwork.com.
  3. Transfer one of the domains that we can use for testing purposes (i.e. challengenetwork.com or racketnetwork.com).
  4. Purchase VPS same as clubhouse (note there will be some overlapping payments required maybe one month).
  5. Purchase SQL VPS (may be able to do this without increasing monthly cost – i.e. private database server but less ram for app server).
  6. Create a new ftp/shell user called racquetnetwork on new VPS.
  7. Create a new database called racquetnetwork on new SQL VPS.
  8. Install WordPress.
  9. Enable Multisite.
  10. Install Buddypress.
  11. Configure Buddypress Default Theme.
  12. Create Buddypress Default Child Theme.
  13. Create blogs.
  14. Configure Buddypress Default Child Theme for blogs.
  15. Install and configure plugins per our spreadsheet.
  16. Install racquetnetwork plugin (replacement for Main Site).
  17. Start migrating data. Could take a few weeks but will be worth it. Will start with best intentions to use export/import tools as much as possible to ensure ‘fresh/clean start’. As I encounter bits of data that don’t have export/import tools, I will need to export/import raw data tables which is less ideal because it’s not really a ‘fresh/clean start’ – but we’ll pick our battles. At the very least, a few tables from the old challengenetwork database will need to be brought in raw – however this is not a big risk because I understand the tables and how they are used really well.
  18. Ensure we are 100% happy with new website and that all data is current.
  19. Transfer the racquetnetwork.com domain. There may be 24 hours of data to consider here but should be easy to track.
  20. Backup racquetnetwork.com email. Shaun is good to go – just Brent.
  21. Create new Google Apps account for Racquet Network. This used to be free but it may not be any more. This is really important because dreamhost email is really holding us back right now. We can move email marketing to mailchimp and use Google Apps for all company email/calendar/docs/tasks/images/video/…
  22. Link the new Dreamhost Racquet Network account to the Google Apps account from the Dreamhost panel.
  23. Re-configure mail clients (desktop and mobile) to pull mail from new account.
  24. Backup every aspect of shamac account locally.
  25. Delete the shamac account.

  1. The new account has to be set up with a company credit card and must be completely separate from both of our personal accounts.
